The starting point was the Emmanuelle, the famous high backed peacock chair. Doshi Levien kept its tall fan and replaced the wicker with rope stretched in an open grid. The back works like a screen. On a terrace that neighbors can see into, it gives a measure of privacy, and it still lets light and breeze reach whoever is sitting there.

Six pieces make up the family: a garden chair, an armchair with a headrest, a two seater and a three seater sofa, a round fabric pouf and a garden side table in teak or marble. The designers describe the chair as suited to a dining table as much as to a slow afternoon, so a single model can move between the two jobs.

Aluminum frames do not rust, which counts on a coast or beside a pool. Rope sheds rain instead of soaking it up, and the sofa cushions are covered in mass-dyed acrylic fabric that keeps its color in hard sun. Kettal offers many frame coatings, rope colors and fabrics, so one design can look quiet on a city roof or bright by the sea.

The range has no dedicated Kettal Cala center table. In front of the sofas, the side table and the round pouf take that place, and a low table from another Kettal outdoor furniture family can join them.
